Ustad Amjad Ali Khan's New Book 'Master on Masters'

Honourable President of India His Excellency Shri Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan unveiled the book written by Ustad Amjad Alikhan titled ‘Master on Masters’ . It was published by the Penguin Random House.

About the Book:

Veteran musician and sarod maestro, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan had written a deeply personal book about the lives and times of some of the greatest icons of Indian classical music. Having known these legends personally, he recalls anecdotes and details about their individual musical styles, bringing them alive. Twelve eminent musicians of the twentieth century appear in the book - Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Amir Khan, Begum Akhtar, Alla Rakha, Kesarbai Kerkar, Kumar Gandharva, M.S. Subbulakshmi, Bhimsen Joshi, Bismillah Khan, Ravi Shankar, Vilayat Khan and Kishan Maharaj. In writing about them, Amjad Ali Khan transcends the Gharana and north-south divide and presents portraits of these great artists that are drawn with affection, humour and warmth. Like his gently warming music, this is a delightful book for the music lovers.

A Secret Bunker Vault in the Swiss mountain for Bitcoin

The wildly growing Bitcoin Company Xapo gives super security physical storage place for its customers to keep their Bitcoins. Interestingly, they are not charging for this service. It’s free. They smartly converted the decommissioned Swiss military bunker into a super safe vault for their customers. Actually, its precise location is secret, only accessed by a handful of Xapo executives.

Having this idea Xapo has raised nearly $ 40 million from Benchmark, Greylock Partners, Index Ventures, Fortress Investment Group, Ribbit Capital and Emergence Capital Partners.
The Xapo vault incorporates multiple layers of the most advanced forms of cryptographic security to secure our bitcoins. The whole process includes multi-factor authentication and private key segmentation between others.

Pandit Arvind Parikh

Whenever a mellifluous Sitar flowing in the air, you can’t forget Arvind Parikah, a classical Hindustani musician who has dedicated his life to music.

Beginning:
Pandit Arvind Parikh was born in Ahmedabad into a Gujarati Business Family with cultural and spiritual influences. His father was a businessman and mother was a painter. At home he was taught Indian music by musicians when he used to play several instruments like dilruba, violin, mandolin, jaltarang and flute. Later he started sitar, which he found suited him best. In 1944, at the age of 17, he moved to Mumbai and started learning from the famous sitar maestro Ustad Vilayat Khan. His musical education continued uninterrupted throughout his performing career, from 1944 to 2004 until Khan's death.

Musical Life

Pandit Parikh is having a performing career spanning over six decades. Association with different learned musicians and vocalists helped him in his research work on different rare ragas and compositions. B. R. Deodhar,
Latafat Hussain Khan, Amir Khan, Niyaz Ahmad-Faiyaz Ahmad Khan, D. T. Joshi, Radhika Mohan Maitra need special mention here. He has performed in India and abroad. He has been featured at almost all major music festivals in India and Europe, and has had very successful concert tours in several parts of West Asia, Far East and Australia. He is a regular broadcaster on All India Radio. His daughter Purvi Parikh is also a classical vocalist and learnt music from many greats including her parents.  Mrs. Parikh was disciple of Niyaz Ahmad-Faiyaz Ahmad Khan of KiranaGharana.

Pandit Parikh has documented most of the precious compositions and ragas. "Sitar Guru", "Bandish Parampara" published by Navras records UK are some of the testimonies of his work.

Awards

Pandit Parikh worked as musicologist, teacher, cultural ambassador, and promoted initiatives aimed at increasing interest in Hindustani classical music in India and abroad. He was Vice President of the International Music Council (UNESCO) during 1994-97 and is currently co-ordinator for the Indian sub-continent. He is President of the Indian Musicological Society, chairman of the Western India Chapter of ITC-Sangeet Research Academy.
Pandit Parikh has been awarded the Gaurav Puraskar for the year 1997-98 by the Gujarat State Sangeet Natak Akademi. He has also been awarded the National Award by Sangeet Natak Akademi for Instrumental music (sitar) for the year 2003. He is a top grade artist and a regular broadcaster of All India Radio.

Besides his towering achievements in the musical sphere, he is also a successful businessman and gentle human being.

Surtarang has arranged a rich tribute for Panditji. I hereby request all of the readers of this blog, kindly stay tuned to listen the mesmerizing music of the legend.

Surtarang pays humble tribute to the legendary Hindustani classical vocalist late Padma Vibhushan Gaansaraswati Vidushi Kishori Amonkar

Kishori Amonkar (10th April 1932 - 3rd April 2017)

A woman of great strength, with the courage to stand alone and defend herself in a musical world that was predominantly steered by men, she carved a niche for herself and was unshakeable force in the classical music world!  Kishori Amonkar was often herself coerced and cajoled into to compromising the tradition to sing lighter forms for the pleasure of her audience although she stood firm, refusing to change the essential basic tenets of her gharana and Indian Classical Music. This is the quality that made her achieve her excellence.

A careful vistaar of the shuddh swars of the Raaganga in a reverberating scintillating voice, maneuvering the nuances of the Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana, Kishori Amonkar had created an atmosphere of pure magic whenever she performed.

She displayed her expertise of the gayaki, a legacy that was handed to her by her guru, her mother Mogubai Kurdikar of the Alladiya Khan Jaipur Atrauli Gharana. Her musical training included honing a trained voice that traversed 3 octaves and the ability to discern Shrutis (Microtones).
She chose to perform less, to teach in the guru-shishya parampara and carry the tradition forward and also write a book instead. There are many students she has taught and she was exemplary among many young artists all over the country who will look up to her for years to come as a role model, a brilliant musician and a personality beyond par. She may be passed away but her music remains resonate forever in the hearts of millions of pure music lovers across the globe.

 Recognition and legacy

Amonkar received several of India's national awards and civilian honours, including the Padma Bhushan, in 1987, and Padma Vibhushan in 2002. She was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 1985 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship for 2009.  She was awarded the prestigious Dr. T. M. A. Pai Outstanding Konkani Award in 1991. In 2016, she was one of seven recipients of the M.S. Subbulakshmi Award for classical music.
